Day 3 of the Great Striped Shirt Challenge:  After making a skirt for myself and newborn hats for our non-existent babies, I decided that I needed to make something cool for the male member of our family.  There is nothing that Jeff loves more than his iphone.  I have an iphone, too, but I’m not captivated by it the way that Jeff is.  That device is always attached to him. It’s the first thing he reaches for in the morning and the last thing he looks at before he turns the lights off at night.  He’s on it so much that it was banned from our honeymoon.  We have house rules now where he can’t look at his phone at the dinner table or riding in a car with me.   I decided to make a cover for it, maybe it’ll stay covered more often!!

After the skirt and the hats, all I had left over from the striped shirt was this back piece. The soft knit would be perfect to cushion the phone:

I cut a 11x 4″ rectangles out of the striped knit (for the interior piece), a piece of leftover quilt batting and some gray corduroy (exterior piece):

Layer the striped knit and corduroy right sides facing each other and quilt batting on top of the knit:

If you have strap or a ribbon you want to use to tie the end close, sandwich it in between the two right sides of the knit and corduroy. I re-used the strap that came on the original shirt sleeve.  (this piece is optional and can also just be decorative):

Sew along three sides of the rectangle. Leave the fourth side un-stitched so that you can turn it right side out (It’s hard to see in the picture below but I sewed the top, left and bottom seams with a quarter inch seam allowance):

Turn the rectangle right side out. Top stitch along both ends:

Fold your rectangle in half and sew along the long sides with a 1/4″ seam allowance.  This was a little hard for my cheap $75 Singer to  handle because the layers of fabric were pretty thick now:

If you have a button or embellishment, sew that to the top:

And your done!!  It’s a pretty snug fit for his phone:

Jeff has a hard case cover already for his phone, but this one would be perfect for when he travels.

Thanks for tuning in to the 3 days of The Great Striped Shirt Challenge!   I pretty much used up all the usable shirt fabric on these three projects: the skirt, the  baby hats and this iphone cover.  It was a fun challenge to come up with a variety of projects and do a series of posts on it.  Check back next week as I kick off another series- Unwrapped: Favorite Snack Recipes.
