Monogram Button Pillow (tutorial)

I love buttons!!  I collect them, especially the ones that are different and odd looking.  Buttons are so fun and whimsical.  Whenever there is a jar of vintage buttons at a fabric store, I can’t resist going through them and adding a bunch to my collection.  I don’t care if they don’t match, I love how they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes!

This is a great project if you have a bunch of buttons lying around and you don’t know what to do with them. It works best if you have a large variety of buttons in different sizes, shapes and colors. I added them to a pillow, but you can do this to a shirt or make it wall decor. It’s so simple!

First, I used disappearing fabric marker to draw out the outline of the letter “F” onto the front piece of the pillow cover:

Then I filled it with buttons. This is just to make sure I had enough buttons to cover the surface area! I didn’t want to get almost done and realize that I didn’t have enough!  I had to remove them all to sew them on, so I didn’t worry about the placement too much:

Then sew one by one onto the pillow cover. If you have an embroidery hoop, it would make the sewing easier. I couldn’t find mine, it was packed away somewhere in our hundreds of boxes, so it was a slow process to sew each button on:

Then sew the pillow cover together.

All done!

Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! Love the state T-shirts, but I think this is my favorite tutorial! I may make one in the shape of a heart.

Outwardly, it looks great, but use a pillow for its intended purpose will be extremely difficult, do not you?

Once I walked into a very small button store with high ceilings in Trinidad. It was taller than it was wide. The walls, counters and display cases were loaded with buttons. It was so hard to choose, but I made my selections and came home with some wonderful ones to add to my collection.

I am horrible at coming up with crafty ideas, so I absolutely love this pillow! It’s simple and so decorative.
