My Wedding: The Cupcake Stand

I have to devote a whole post to our stunning cupcake stand, it is my favorite DIY project for our wedding and I didn’t even make it myself.  The wedding cake and cupcakes display was going to be one of the focal points at our reception so I wanted something nicer than the cheap styrofoam or cardboard stands that you can buy and decorate yourself with ribbon.  We were also going to order 20 dozen cupcakes so it had to also be BIG enough to fit about 250 cupcakes on it.  I searched all over the internet for cupcake stand options but most of them were either cheap looking or too small.  I finally stumbled across this cupcake display picture and my jaw-dropped. It was exactly what I was looking for!  Fortunately for me, my friend P is an amazing designer and master woodworker (he built the baptismal pool for our church!)  and offered to make something similar for me!  Except he made the stand bigger and with SIX tiers!  The cupcake stand is HUGE,  the base layer is 25″x25″ and with all the tiers together, it towers over 3 feet high.  Because P built it out in Boston, he ingeniously constructed it so that it could come apart and be shipped out to California.

Here is a picture of the cupcake stand on our wedding day (I first wrote about it here):

The craftsmanship of this stand is impeccable.  P even built a lip all around each tier with crown molding so that the cupcakes don’t slip off!  I know this extra detail was a lot of work to add on but it truly made the stand so pretty.  He even bought an airbrush to spray paint the white paint so that it was nice and smooth. I love love LOVED the cupcake display! And it was even more special that a dear friend made it for us!

Here is a picture that I snapped with my iphone of the cupcake stand under construction :

It took over 20+ man hours to complete!

Because the stand is so unique, a few of my friends have since borrowed it to use for their own weddings!  I love that other brides are getting the same joy out of it as I did.  (I’m thinking of selling the stand so if any LA/OC bride is interested, shoot me an email!)

Ha… “shipped” she says… the whole reason we had to rent an SUV instead of a car was for the cupcake stand! ;)
