Jeff put me in charge of coming up with our Halloween costumes this year. Actually, it was more like he sent me an email while he was away on a business trip saying “I forgot to tell you, my office Halloween party is in three days, can you make us costumes? Thanks. Bye!” Hahaha, typical husband move to forget to tell me about a work event. But totally atypical (and naive!) of him to trust me to pick our costumes this year. Bad move, hubs!! Muaahahah! He had NO idea what I was scheming in my little head. I had visions of putting Jeff in tights, Jeff in an old bridesmaid dress, Jeff in glitter makeup, Jeff as a overstuffed carebear…..ohhh I was having a good time with this. Since Jeff was going to be flying into town and going straight to the party where I would be meeting him with our outfits, I could pick out ANYTHING for us and he’d have to wear it! I had free reign to dress him in anything!
I finally landed on the idea of us being cupcakes!! We love cupcakes in our household, I’ve gone on many self-guided cupcake tours when we travel. We could dress as giant cupcakes for the party! As much as I love embarrassing my husband though, I realized that this is a new job and as much as I’d love to see Jeff wearing a pink cupcake outfit, he’s still trying to establish himself at work. It’s probably not a good idea for him to be known as “that new cupcake guy”, so I thought that I’D be the cupcake! This was the outfit I came up with:
I made a little fascinator with a swirl of frosting and strawberry to wear on my head:
My silver Tory Burch flats completed the outfit:
The best part is that I already had most of the fabric and materials to make my costume. I only had to spend $3 on the silver material for the cupcake lining.
And what did Jeff end up being, you ask? He was the pastry chef!!! Not as embarrassing as wearing a cupcake outfit, but still pretty fun. I happened to have an apron with pink cupcakes all over it that my friend G got for me from Anthropologie. I got a chef’s hat for $4 at Michaels and cut out a handlebar mustache out of felt for Jeff to wear. A pastry bag full of pink frosting, a spatula and whisk were his props. He didn’t even protest. (I think he was too jet-lagged and delusional to put up a fight.) He was such a good sport!!!
I’ll put together a full tutorial on how I made my cupcake costume tomorrow!
Happy Halloween from Jeff and Ilene!!!
