A Happy Surprise Birthday for My Mom!

This past weekend my beautiful mom turned 60 years old!  The Chinese zodiac calendar is a 60 year (or sexagesimal) cycle so the 60th birthday is huge occasion.  My sister and I knew we had to plan something big for the milestone. There is nothing that makes my mom happier than when the whole family is together, so my brother, Jeff and I flew in to Orange County and joined my sister and her husband and surprised her Friday night.  Jeff flew in from Taiwan for just the weekend!  We stood outside my parents’ bedroom Friday night with a cake lit with candles and surprised her with a loud off-key rendition of “happy birthday” . My mom peeked out the window in her pajamas and was so shocked!  She was laughing and crying all at once! I’ve never seen her so happy!

The weekend was filled with many more great surprises.  We rented a lovely beach house in picturesque Laguna Beach, just a half hour from our home, and spent lazy days at the beach, playing board games til midnight (our family is oddly obsessed with European strategy games!), napping in the hammock, eating the moistest most delicious chocolate birthday cake,  playing with the Bailey the dog, bar-b-queing in the backyard and watching some spectacular sunsets. It was the perfect weekend to spend with my mom and great family time.  And I was so happy to be reunited with my Jeff for 48 hours before he jetsetted off again!!

Happy Birthday, Mom!!! I love you!

Haha yes!! We play Dominion (and all the expansion sets), Settlers (+ seafarers and cities and knights), puerto Rico, power grid and any other strategy game that we can get our hands on! My family is nerdy like that!
