Painting Dishware with Edible Paint

in holidays, jeff, tutorial, valentines day

I found this clever idea on How About Orange – decorating dishes with edible paint.  Ingenious! I love it!    I surprised Jeff with these customized dishware for our 1.5 year anniversary dinner last week.  (I can’t believe we’ve been married for a year and a half already! Seems like it was just our wedding day!)  It was a fun way to personalize our dishes and make things a little more festive for the special occasion.

This was quick and easy and you most likely already have all the supplies you need – food coloring, powdered sugar, paintbrushes and water:

To make the edible paint, mix 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar with 1 teaspoon of water and a couple drops of food coloring.  You may have to add more sugar or water to get the right consistency:

Then using a paintbrush, paint your design onto your dishes:

Its easy to wipe off and start over if you make a mistake. Let dry for a couple minutes and the paint should harden.

You can come up with all sorts of cute designs or phrases!

The “paint” washes off with a little hot water.  I think this could be a fun activity for kids to decorate their own plates.  I can also see this as a cute way to label all the different dishes you serve at a party. The sky’s the limit with this one!
