(This is part of a series I wrote on ice cream making. See full list of posts here.)

Is anyone else as upset that the Olympics are over as I am? I’ve been totally obsessed with the London Olympics! For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a huge Olympic fanatic. The world stops every two years when its Winter and Summer Olympic time! It started when I was a little tot and my parents let us stay up late to watch the Olympic torch to run by our hometown during the  1984 Los Angeles Olympics. I remember cheering on Mary Lou Retton! Since then, an Olympic obsession was born!

Last night was the first night in 16 days where I went to bed before midnight! I’ve had an Olympic-induced hangover every morning for the last two weeks. Now I’m suffering from post-Olympic depression. What better way to nurse myself back to into good spirits than to indulge in some icy treat?

I got a pint of farm fresh strawberries at the local farmers market so I had to make some strawberry froyo!    Add toppings like fresh fruit and mochi (see my recipe here), and you’ve got yourself the perfect  summertime dessert:

I used David Lebowitz’s Strawberry Frozen Yogurt recipe from his book “The Perfect Scoop”.   Much like the Peach Gelato recipe that I shared about last week, this recipe involves macerating and then pureeing the fruit first.  I sliced up the strawberries, tossed with sugar and vodka and let sit for an hour, stirring every once in awhile:

After an hour, you get this juicy, flavorful syrupy stuff:

Puree with plain yogurt:

Strain and then add to ice cream maker and start churning!

Freeze for an hour before serving!

Then serve with fresh fruit and mochi!

It’s the perfect pick-me-up!  Four years and Rio seems so far away!!
