San Francisco Lovin’ – Framed Art

in decor, sewing, tutorial

Since its Valentine’s week, I thought I’d share another  “heart” project with you guys.  I sewed this California state with a heart on San Francisco for Zoey’s nursery before she was born. The walls were looking plain so I was looking to make some quick and easy artwork to frame up for her pink and gray bedroom.   I know state art is really “in” right now and I’ve made many projects before with a similar design (see  vintage state t-shirt tutorial here and united states pillow here).  I really wanted her to have something to represent her birth city and we really have loved living in San Francisco the past year and a half. I’ve never been more reminded of this than this past Saturday when I woke up to sunny blue skies and checked my Facebook newsfeed in bed and saw it filled with photos of my Boston friends digging out of 2-3 feet of snow. I remember those days and I don’t miss it one bit!  (I do miss my friends there though!)

Anyways, I decided to sew this together because I wanted the subtle textures of different fabrics.  First, I ironed on iron-on adhesive to the back of gray canvas, which luckily doesn’t fray much. Then I google image searched for an outline of the state of California which I used to trace and cut out of the gray fabric.  I ironed  the California silhouette onto pink corduroy fabric:

I stitched all around the gray state with pink thread. For the pink heart, I wanted it to “pouf” out a little so I cut a small heart out of leftover quilt batting. I cut a slightly larger pink heart and placed it over the batting and then stitched all around it with white thread:

If I were to do it again, I think I would have doubled up on the quilt batting because I don’t think it is “poufy” enough to be noticeable.

To frame the piece, I just decided to wrap it around the glass piece of an old picture frame and tape it on the backside using painters tape.  Then I just stuck it into the frame:

The best part of this project was that it was totally free since I used scrap pieces of fabric and an old frame.  It’s now hanging on the wall above the diaper changing table:

(See tutorial for the “All you need is love” sign here.  See tutorial for the contoured diaper changing pad cover here)

I’ve been meaning to share pictures of the completed nursery for awhile now but now that Zoey’s here, it doesn’t quite look as nice as when I originally set it up!  The baby’s stuff adds so much more clutter to the space!  One day, I’ll clean it all up and share it with you!
